This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical biological terror, but inside Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when the couple transition from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
