Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
