Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
